ADVOCACY Advocacy

There are two main types of advocacy that engage the DRC

These are:

Systematic Advocacy which includes activities such as the pursuit of installation of hearing loops at shop front counters, meeting rooms, churches and public buildings so as to benefit anyone with a hearing aid containing an active telecoil switch. The DRC also encourages organisations to hire loops and other equipment to assist those with hearing loss and is active in the pursuit of those endeavours, as well as encouraging organisations to undertake Hearing Awareness Training for their staff.

Individual Advocacy is where the DRC may provide written / verbal advice in support of a person with a hearing impairment, and / or in assisting with detailed paperwork for someone on a disability pension to interact with Centrelink, house rental or child maintenance issues. It could also mean providing an individual assessment for an 'assistive listening device' by an applicant to the Job Access Workplace Modification Scheme

The DRC has been very successful in assisting clients gain Job Access Workplace Modification support. Within the ACT, Job Access has provided such things as Cochlear Implant Processors, hearing aids, personal FM systems, bluetooth neck loops for use with mobile phones and office construction work to reduce or eliminate workplace noise and volume controlled phones.

The DRC's Listening and Communications Technology branch, administers it's ALD (Assistive Listening Devices) program which provides access to trialing a wide range of devices that may increase the clarity of sound and speech for an individual. In many cases it is essential that the client's hearing aid or Cochlear Implant has its telecoil feature enabled.
