Better Hearing Australia - Canberra Group

The BHA - Canberra Group provides lipreading classes and support to any person with a hearing loss. The aim is to assist those with a hearing loss to manage their affairs and the transition to wearing hearing aids by conducting weekly 'Lip Reading' classes in a social setting. Although the technical name is "Hearing Loss Management Classes," most people know these sessions as 'lip reading' and classes on lip reading skills and development are in important component of the curriculum that we follow.  All people with a hearing loss are welcome to attend and see if the sessions will benefit them.

Canberra Tinnitus Self Help Group

Tinnitus is persistent or intermittent ringing in the ears where no external physical noise is present. It is a physical condition and is usually caused by a fault in the hearing system. A major cause of tinnitus is exposure to excessive noise, like chainsaws, industrial machinery and rock concerts. The Canberra Tinnitus Self Help Group meets to offer counselling and support to people who have Tinnitus, or who are supporting someone who has tinnitus. The group meets every 2nd month (Sat 2pm - 4pm) at the Grant Cameron Community Centre in Holder.

       Canberra Cochlear Implant Support Group

Adapting to using a cochlear implant can take a bit of time, and a bit of know-how by those who've been there. Well, look no further!

The CCISG provides a social setting for CI implantees to meet, share their stories and learn about how to adapt to using a CI in a supportive environment. For technical questions concerning your CI, you will need to see your audiologist or CI post-implant team, but otherwise - all comers and all stories on living with a CI are most welcome.

The Shepherd Centre

The Shepherd Centre is a school for preschool children aged between 0-5, and teaches them how to listen and speak with the use of hearing aids and cochlear implants. Parents are taught how to integrate the learning of language into play activities they do with their children, such as trips to the zoo. Children attending the Centre are also able to access social skills through play therapy sessions which involve the other children in their program. Specialist program staff such as audiologists, speech therapists and counsellors are available to assist families in The Shepherd Centre program and there are several centres based in NSW and ACT, with the Canberra centre located in Rivett.
