COMMUNICATION Deafness

How to communicate with a person who has a profound hearing loss

It is important to get the attention of the Deaf person first, wave your arms, flash a light, stamp your feet or touch them gently on the shoulder.

Make sure the Deaf person can see your face clearly.

Do not stand in front of a window as the light will cast a shadow on your face.

Give them a clue about what you wish to discuss, e.g. point to the computer.

Learn the AUSLAN alphabet

Learn some basic signs which you can use.

Use facial expressions and gestures to emphasise your point.

Use a pen and paper if necessary.

Speak naturally, do not shout, as this distorts your face making lip reading difficult.
relax and smile.

Use an interpreter for important meetings or situations.

Do not patronise the Deaf person.

Remember a Deaf person may nod when you are speaking to them, but it does not necessarily mean that they have understood what you have said.  Get the person to clarify what you have discussed.
